Mandalay

Mandalay is the second largest city in Myanmar after Yangon and is the centre of the Arts and Handicrafts industry. Whereas just ten years ago cars were secondary to bicycles these days the situation has rapidly reversed with the growing prosperity of the area. The town is a bustling hive of activity and is teeming with traders from China and India. It is still tranquil however in the right spots especially around the 8 miles perimeter of the Palace and on Mandalay Hill.

A visit to the Mahamuni Pagoda is a must - this houses the 2,500 year old bronze Mahamuni Buddha Image which was transported more than two centuries ago from Thrigoke Hill near Mrauk-U in Rakhine State to Mandalay.

Mingun is also a nice one hour boat-ride to the other side of the Ayeyawaddy River
