gohtiek viaduct

The Gohtiek Viaduct, the second highest Bridge in the world at 1,100 feet above the lowest ground level, was designed by a British company and constructed by a firm from New York in 1903. It was blown up by the British as they retreated to India in the second world war and further destroyed by the Japanese when they were subsequently defeated. The Gohtiek Viaduct was rebuilt in 1948 and re-opened in 1950 and still serves as a vital link between the lower plains of Myanmar and the Northern Shan Plateau. The best way to see the bridge is by train - the road is a long way off
